AIRE - "Alliance for Inclusivity in Roller Derby within Europe" is a group for Black*Indigenous*People of Color, LGBTQIA+ and allies looking to raise awareness about racism and multiple intersecting forms of discriminations as well as working to build an inclusive community. AIRE is inspired by the works of Team Indigenous on Turtle Island (settler states: U.S. and Canada) and wants to bring awareness and critical thinking about Roller Derby to Europe. The group started in 2018 in Lucerne (CH) with Pei-Jeane Chen aka Mew #2 and Natyada Tawonsri aka Bæmshi #557 (based in Hamburg). Natyada remained in the process of building this community. In Berlin, AIRE conducted a BIPoC safer space workshop at the 2019 European Roller Derby Organisational Conference, facing struggles with representation. Team Indigenous is demanding decolonial actions within Roller Derby and beyond and AIRE follows this call and knows that this also means the name of the group itself - “Europe‘ - has to change. The zine is a starting point in centering voices, perspectives, stories, strategies, knowledge, and intersectional fights of BIPoC locating themselves on this continent in the predominantly cis white skate community. It creates a platform for BIPoC by BIPoC.
