Building quilt communities across a global network.
"Waterfalls and Sparring Scars" is a performance and workshop space that transforms stories of migrational narratives into a quilted network. Each session is held one-on-one with the artist with the aim to produce a quilt piece. These quilt pieces are the links she uses to re-represent the vast landscape of Asian Diaspora communities present in North America and Europe, and furthermore position our relation to them. The project focuses on multi-directional memories and gives space to diverse migrational narratives across age groups, demographics and experiences to visualise their story in a wider landscape.

Ratri Notosudirdjo was born in Jakarta, Indonesia. Following her family’s immigration, she was raised in different towns and cities across North America. Returning to Indonesia at the age of 14 marked a paradigm shift, shaping the mechanism of her cultural switch. Her research and practice engage in de- and postcolonial theory, centering on contemporary mechanisms of the cultural and poetic identity and often forming new languages, new rituals or new meanings from them. The works reconstruct these new forms through the exchange and bridging of cultural realities, resulting from cross-disciplinary work processes that engage collaboration with an array of young creatives in Rotterdam. Performances, text and interventions are often the result of these crossings. Currently, she is engaged in organising artistic interventions with Stichting JUNCTION, a platform dedicated to creating art interventions from interdisciplinary research initiatives from and by cultural workers, artists and researchers in The Netherlands.

Performance & Workshop
Price 26 €
A 120-minute session that includes:
- An intimate viewing of her most recent performance work (circa 20-30 minutes).
"Waterfalls" is a multimedia performance that maps her family’s migrational route throughout North America, tracing various memories from the perspective of her father, sister and herself. The performance moves through the three of them speaking of these memories, as they slowly move in canon, a dissonance between reflections is revealed.Â
- A 90-minute quilting workshop.
Quilts act as containers of broad or intimate histories, in these workshops, participants find a way to tell their story through fabrics, and explore the aesthetic plains of scars, scratches, and bodily markings. The quilt pieces produced by each participant can be seen as part of an online quilt, where each piece puzzles together the network of stories.
The workshop is facilitated at the location of the artist’s studio or online, all materials will be provided.
