Serene Hui's research-led practice reframes and rethinks the conditions of the contemporary through politically driven art-making and inquiry. At the intersection of art, theory, and social action, she addresses obscure issues often by creating an ontological shift of displacement in her works. Through juxtaposing and converging dissimilar situations, sometimes dilemmas in the same spacetime, the work raises questions such as how does one respond to, or what could one possibly get out of, the moment of conflict, estrangement or resistance. Within the installation situations, there are merged multiple politically or culturally coded settings; by exposing the objects and information in a neutral position, the work aims to explore the diverse meanings of its complex contents.

Serene has presented in numerous international exhibitions and artist-in-residencies. She is now based in The Netherlands where she is completing her Master Artistic Research at the Royal Academy of Arts The Hague.

Artist Book/ Text in English (partly Chinese) /140 pages, 13,5x19 cm/ 2021/ 1st Edition of 30

Price 26 €

The artist book is an attempt to conceptualise the link between political and artistic thinking: how a political crisis spills into the artistic practices, how an artistic practice can have political outcomes, and ultimately how crisis redefines the very realms of politics and aesthetics.
The text is opened up from an intro-retrospective hypothesis : can we perceive the essence of ambivalence as a (political and aesthetic) strategy to manoeuvre in a borrowed time in a borrowed space?  From three perspectives that lay entwined in personal experiences: the cultural identity of a Hongkonger, theories of ambivalence and contemporary artistic practices.Â
